2 days Trekking in Toubkal Mountain
Day 1: Journey from Marrakech to Imlil, then Trek to Toubkal Base Camp
Your adventure begins with an early morning departure from Marrakech. As we leave behind the hustle and bustle of the city and head south towards the majestic peaks of the Toubkal Massif. The drive takes us across the expansive Haouz Plain, where the landscape gradually transforms as we approach the foothills. We pass through the small town of Asni, nestled in the foothills. Where the road begins its ascent, winding through stunning scenery as we make our way to the village of Imlil.
Upon reaching Imlil, a picturesque village at the heart of the High Atlas Mountains. We leave our vehicle behind and meet our experienced mountain guide. The trek begins as we set off along the Mizane Valley. A lush and verdant route that leads us through traditional Berber villages. Our first stop is the village of Aremd, the largest settlement in the valley. Perched on a moraine spur that offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Aremd is a fascinating mix of terraced fields, traditional homes, and bustling streets where goats and cattle roam freely. Here, you’ll get a glimpse of the local way of life, where the Berber people have cultivated these rugged lands for generations, growing crops like corn, potatoes, and walnuts.
Continuing east, we cross a floodplain and begin to ascend along mule tracks that lead us into the towering cliffs above the valley. As we climb higher, the scenery becomes more dramatic, with rocky outcrops and steep inclines. Eventually, we reach the shrine of Sidi Chamarouch, a spiritual site that draws both tourists and pilgrims. Nestled beside a small waterfall, the village of Sidi Chamarouch is a cluster of homes that blend into the landscape, with the shrine itself located across a stone bridge (accessible only to Muslims).
Toubkal Refuge
From Sidi Chamarouch, the trail continues to ascend, becoming more challenging as we approach the snowline. The path zigzags its way up the mountainside, offering stunning views as we climb steadily towards our goal: the Toubkal Refuge. Situated at an elevation of 3,206 meters, the refuge is our resting place for the night, providing basic accommodation in the shadow of North Africa’s highest peak. After approximately six hours of trekking, we settle in at the refuge, ready to rest and prepare for the summit attempt the next day.
Day 2: Toubkal Base Camp - Toubkal Summit - Imlil - Marrakech
Today’s adventure begins with an early morning departure as we set out to conquer Jebel Toubkal. The highest peak in Northern Africa. Our ascent starts at the Toubkal base camp, where we follow the route up the south cirque. We cross the stream that flows above the refuge and tackle one of the mountain’s scree fields. A challenging expanse of loose boulders and rocks. While the terrain can be demanding, the hike is relatively straightforward, and the effort is rewarded with stunning views throughout.
As we progress, the path leads us to the ridge line and then onto the plateau. From here, it’s just a short walk to the summit, where the panoramic vistas are truly breathtaking. From this vantage point, you can see the expansive Marrakesh Plain to the west. The towering High Atlas Mountains to the north, and even the distant Anti-Atlas and Sahara to the south.
After taking in the spectacular views and capturing the moment with photos, we begin our descent. Retracing our steps, we make our way back to Imlil. Following a well-deserved break, we will then drive back to Marrakech. The journey down the mountain offers a chance to reflect on the incredible experience and enjoy the changing scenery as we head back to the vibrant city of Marrakech.
